The Researchers Department supports learners from year 10 to year 13 with a range of needs, including autism, ADHD and learning difficulties. Learners are grouped into classes based on their age, communication style, emotional and behavioural needs, and individual learning styles.

There are four classes within the department – Researchers 1, Researchers 2, Researchers 3 and Researchers 4 – each consisting of between seven to nine learners. Every class is led by one teacher and supported by at least two teaching assistants, ensuring a caring, safe and meaningful learning environment. In addition, personal care assistants (PCAs) or health care assistants (HCAs) may work across classes to provide further support with personal care and participation in sessions.

Throughout the school day, learners have opportunities to transition to different environments within the school. These transitions support social interaction with other classes, particularly during Friday theme days, as well as participation in phonics sessions three times a week within the department.

Learners in the Researchers department have access to a range of specialist facilities designed to promote independence and personal development. These include a common room and terrace, where learners can develop their curiosity, communication, social skills and sensory regulation. A life skills room (kitchen) enables learners to practise cooking and household tasks such as sweeping, ironing, washing, drying, vacuuming and making a bed. There is also a sensory room available to support learners in regulating and decompressing when needed.

The aim of the Researchers department is to ensure that skills developed in earlier stages of education are applied in meaningful, real-life contexts linked to the wider world. We strive to support learners in becoming well-rounded individuals, prepared for their next steps into further education or day services when they leave Yeoman Park Academy at the end of year 13.

From the end of year 11, learners have opportunities to access Pathfinders, where they can experience different colleges, social care settings and day services. This helps them to express their preferences and make informed choices about their future. In key stage 5, learners can also take part in work experience, either within the school or in the community. These opportunities are tailored to their interests, enabling them to explore the world of work and make informed decisions.

In addition, learners receive bespoke careers guidance, including individual careers interviews, exposure to a range of job opportunities both in and out of school, and support in creating a personalised careers plan. This plan highlights their interests, strengths and areas of need, while also providing useful information for families to explore future pathways. Learners will also leave Yeoman Park Academy with a Vocational Profile (CV) to support the next education provider with information, informing them of the skills the learners have obtained whilst at Yeoman Park Academy.

Through consistent routines, positive relationships and tailored support, we enable our learners to build confidence, discover their strengths and develop the skills they need for the next stage of their journey beyond Yeoman Park Academy.
