The Adventurers department is our specialist learning environment, designed to support learners aged 8 to 18 who experience high levels of anxiety and may display challenging behaviours. Currently made up of two classes – Adventurers 1 and Adventurers 2, the department provides a structured, supportive setting for up to 11 learners, tailored to meet their individual needs.

Our dedicated team of experienced staff work closely with each learner, using their expertise to build trust, promote emotional regulation, and help learners engage positively with their school day. A high staff-to-learner ratio, with consistent routines and structure, is the success of the provision. These elements are crucial in promoting positive behaviour, minimising dysregulation, and ensuring a safe and supportive setting for all learners.

The Adventurers department has been purposefully designed to provide a safe, calm, and predictable space. Our classrooms and breakout rooms vary in size to accommodate individual needs and are kept clutter-free, with low lighting and sensory items that support their regulation needs. This environment helps reduce sensory overload and provides learners with clearly identified safe places they can access independently when feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

Learners also have access to a secure, enclosed outdoor area, where they can use sensory circuits, large exercise balls, and other equipment designed to promote movement and regulation. Inside, we offer beanbags, weighted blankets, and other sensory supports to help learners stay calm and comfortable.

A key focus of the department is regulation and emotional readiness. Each learner receives tailored strategies and tools to help them engage with the school day, including the use of timers to show clear start and finish times, visual symbols and timetables to provide structure and consistent routines to build confidence and independence. At the heart of this support is the development of strong, trusting relationships between staff and learners. These connections create a sense of safety and belonging.

Mealtimes are held within the classrooms to maintain a calm and familiar atmosphere. Learners are offered breakfast at the start of the day, helping to reduce distractions and ensure nutritional needs are met, as hunger can be a trigger for dysregulation in some learners.

Our team prioritises morning regulation activities, which are personalised for each learner to help them feel settled and ready to learn. Learners in the Adventurers department access a practical, hands-on curriculum that is adapted to their needs. Learning activities are designed to be engaging, sensory, and relevant, helping students build skills, confidence, and a sense of achievement.
