The Explorers department specialises in supporting learners with PMLD needs between the ages of 3 and 18. There are two primary based classes – Explorers 1 and Explorers 2, and two secondary based classes – Explorers 3 and Explorers 4. Our learners have a wide range of physical, medical, learning, and communication needs and benefit from access to a multi-disciplinary approach to learning.

Each class has a nurturing staff team consisting of a teacher and at least two teaching assistants, ensuring a high level of adult support. In addition, personal care assistants and healthcare assistants work across the department to help meet individual needs and ensure consistency of care.

Our aim in the Explorers department is to support all learners in accessing the curriculum by acknowledging their unique developmental journeys. Our ambitious and holistic curriculum goes beyond traditional academics, prioritising wellbeing, personal development, and communication as the foundations for all learning. Key strategies include creating responsive and accessible environments through purposeful classroom design, dedicated sensory rooms, soft play, and outdoor learning areas, ensuring all learners can interact meaningfully within them. We also have access to a rebound therapy room and a hydrotherapy pool to support physiotherapy needs.

Learning is learner-led and driven by curiosity. Through hands-on, multi-sensory exploration and rich experiences, we foster an intrinsic love of learning and an interest in the world around them, making learning meaningful and enjoyable.
