Five learners from classes 14 and 9 recently attended a construction training event in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, in partnership with West Nottinghamshire College, D2N2, and Action for Construction. This was a new experience for our academy, aiming to introduce our learners to the construction industry and its diverse career paths.
The event was designed to give our learners hands-on experience in various sectors of construction. With workshops hosted by 12 employers, they got to explore different aspects of the industry, from operating plant machinery to understanding the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE), learning joinery tips and diamond drilling. They even had fun engaging in Lego construction activities.
Principal, Courtney Hoop, said: “The event left a lasting impact on our learners. They interacted directly with industry experts, which not only ignited their interest but also broadened their understanding of potential career opportunities in construction.”
A spokesperson from Action for Construction said: “We are thrilled with the success of the construction careers event hosted by West Notts College. It’s crucial for schools to provide young people with opportunities to explore the diverse range of careers available within the construction industry. This event not only showcased the various sectors within construction but also highlighted the importance of hands-on experience in shaping career paths.”
They continued, “We believe that by exposing learners to different skill levels and career options, we can help them make informed decisions about their future. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Yeoman Park Academy to inspire and empower the next generation of construction professionals.”
At Yeoman Park, learners have a structured Careers Education, Information, Advice, and Guidance (CEIAG) programme in line with Department for Education guidelines. This programme aims to help learners recognise their strengths, develop employability skills, and explore post-18 education and career options tailored to their individual needs.
