A group of determined young learners from Researchers 4 at Yeoman Park Academy have achieved a significant milestone in their journey towards independence.
The learners have successfully completed the Titan Red Route Travel Training assessment, making them the first group at the Academy to reach this important benchmark in community travel skills.

Since February half term, learners have taken part in formal travel training within the local area, building on their previous visits to the library and park. The focus shifted from staff-led outings to learner-led decision making, encouraging pupils to take ownership of their routes and safety.
As part of the programme, learners mastered the Green Cross Code and gained confidence using different types of pedestrian crossings. They practised identifying safe places to cross and considered real-world hazards such as quiet electric vehicles and drivers not following road signs.
Using digital tools such as Google Maps and what3words, learners explored and chose safe routes, located local amenities, and even practised making phone calls in case of emergencies. These practical exercises helped embed their understanding of road safety and navigation in real-life scenarios.
Public transport was also a key element. Learners used websites to plan bus journeys, practised scanning bus passes, and took trips to nearby destinations. They are now progressing to exploring train travel, including learning about platform safety and reading timetables, with an exciting train journey to Mansfield on the horizon.
The change in the learners has been remarkable. Staff have noted increased confidence, improved decision-making and a stronger sense of community connection.
For many, these are more than just travel skills – they are essential building blocks for a more independent, fulfilling life.
In recognition of their achievement, the group will attend the Travel Training Awards in Nottingham this July. They will present a short talk and receive a trophy to celebrate this proud moment.
Yeoman Park Academy is thrilled to see its learners leading the way and looks forward to supporting more learners on their journey to independence.
